Emergency Medical Services
Emergency Medical Services
Bound Brook Emergency Medical Services (EMS) became an official municipal department in 2023, launching operations as a state-licensed Basic Life Support agency following certification by the New Jersey Department of Health. In its first year, the department responded to nearly 1,200 emergency calls and provided medical support at numerous community events, while also assisting the Borough’s police and fire departments. Bound Brook EMS operates at no direct cost to residents or visitors and continues to grow in its mission to deliver high-quality care. The department provides coverage daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and is dispatched through Somerset County Communications as Station 4 EMS. Its fleet includes two ambulances and a supervisor’s rapid response vehicle.

What We Do
Emergency Medical Response
The primary mission of Bound Brook EMS is the rapid provision of emergency medical care to people experiencing illness or injury.
When an emergency call is received, EMS personnel respond to the scene, assess the patient, establish immediate medical priorities, provide appropriate Basic Life Support, stabilize the patient, and determine the need for continued care and transportation.
The Borough's definition of emergency medical services encompasses services provided to a potentially ill or injured person in response to a call for service, including emergency transportation. The department's authorized BLS capabilities include patient stabilization, airway management, CPR, hemorrhage control, initial wound care, fracture stabilization, victim extrication, and other recognized prehospital emergency medical procedures.
Bound Brook EMS personnel may encounter a wide range of emergencies, including:
- Cardiac emergencies and cardiac arrest
- Respiratory emergencies
- Stroke and neurological emergencies
- Traumatic injuries
- Motor vehicle collisions
- Falls
- Serious bleeding and traumatic injuries
- Diabetic and other medical emergencies
- Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
- Drug overdoses and poisonings
- Pediatric emergencies
- Behavioral and psychiatric emergencies
- Heat- and cold-related emergencies
- Water-related emergencies
- Mass-casualty incidents
- Public events and large gatherings
- Emergencies requiring coordination with police, fire, rescue, and other agencies
The objective in every case is the same: provide prompt, professional prehospital care and give the patient the best possible opportunity for a positive outcome.
Coordination With Bound Brook's Public-Safety Agencies
Bound Brook EMS does not operate independently of the Borough's broader emergency-response system. EMS personnel routinely function alongside the Bound Brook Police Department, Bound Brook Fire Department, Bound Brook Rescue Squad, Office of Emergency Management, and neighboring mutual-aid agencies.
This integrated approach is particularly important during complex incidents.
At a structure fire, for example, EMS personnel may establish a medical group or rehabilitation capability for firefighters while simultaneously remaining prepared to treat civilians. At a motor vehicle collision, EMS works with police and fire personnel to provide patient care while the scene is secured and extrication operations are conducted. During major public events, EMS can provide dedicated medical resources and coordinate with Incident Command and other public-safety agencies.
Patient Care and Transportation
Bound Brook EMS provides emergency ambulance services as part of its mission to deliver prehospital medical care.
EMS personnel evaluate and treat patients at the scene, provide appropriate stabilization, and, when medically indicated and authorized, transport patients to an appropriate medical facility.
The department's responsibilities extend beyond simply providing transportation. Modern EMS is a healthcare discipline in which the period between the onset of an emergency and arrival at the hospital can be critical. EMTs therefore serve as the initial link between the patient, the emergency medical system, and the hospital.
Through assessment, treatment, monitoring, communication, and transportation, Bound Brook EMS personnel help bridge that gap.
Community and Special-Event Services
The role of Bound Brook EMS extends beyond traditional 9-1-1 emergency response.
The department can serve as an important medical resource during community events, public gatherings, planned activities, and incidents that require dedicated emergency medical coverage.
This capability is particularly important for a community such as Bound Brook, where public events can bring together large numbers of residents and visitors. Dedicated EMS resources can provide rapid medical evaluation and intervention while also reducing the impact of an event-related emergency on the Borough's normal emergency response system.
