BUILDING A COMMUNITY ONE BLOCK AT A TIME
Good Neighbor Hayley McHendry
In 2006, Hayley McHendry of West Franklin Street had an idea. A community minded idea. A neighborly sort of idea. How about if we have a BLOCK PARTY? Now, if you know Hayley, you know that this would not be any run of the mill Block Party.
This would be a progressive party...to be held yearly...and to move around Bound Brook. The marvelous idea is that those who come to the party on their street will come the next year to the next street.
She said "Let's call it BLOKTOBERFEST...We'll have a different cook-off every year...We'll have face painting, scarecrow building, bobbing for apples, and running up and down the street because it is safely blocked off".
"We'll have signs and tee shirts and make our own food -- with one portion extra to share with a neighbor"
She wanted a memory that our children could keep about neighbors getting together with neighbors.
What I wish for my good friend and neighbor, Hayley, is that when our kids are grown, they will all come back to Bound Brook for BLOKTOBERFEST.
